Eagle and Child

Christmas 2014 – Oxford, England

Although we didn’t realize it at the time, this was really the first step in our plan to move to Barcelona. Julie often quotes a line from the musical, Wicked; “There are bridges you cross, you didn’t know you crossed, until you’ve crossed.” There seems to be deep truth in that. As Julie and I look back, we can often point to experiences that planted seeds for us to take a certain course of action. Of course, we didn’t recognize the bridge when we were stepping onto it, and where it took us often didn’t play out until much later. This is one of those cases. Its been in the works for almost two years.

In December 2014, we were in Oxford and found our way to The Eagle and Child pub. The Eagle and Child is where C.S. Lewis, J.R.R. Tolkein, Owen Barfield, Charles Williams and others met to drink beer, critique each other’s writing and discuss life. They called themselves The Inklings. As an aside, I’d give one of my arms to go back in history, sit in one of their meetings, wear a tweed suit, smoke a pipe, drink a beer, and join with raspy gusto in their debates and laughter.

As Julie and I enjoyed a bit of holiday cheer in the Eagle and Child, we noticed a quote from C.S. Lewis on the mirror. It put into words something we were feeling at that time; “You’re never too old to set a new goal or dream a new dream”.  That got us thinking. What are our goals?  What are our dreams? Over the course of the next year and a half, we experienced things that helped form, shape, and breath life into a new goal, a new dream for us.

Over the next few weeks we’ll share the time line and those experiences that put us on a course for Barcelona.
