“Well,” said Pooh, “what I like best—” and then he had to stop and think.  Because although eating honey was a very good thing to do, there was a moment just before you began to eat it which was better than when you were, but he didn’t know what that was called.     AA Milne

One of our favorite things to do is to take a road trip and talk…talk about our marriage…our kids…our beliefs…our future…we talk about everything. These little “talking” journeys have been very important in our 33 years of marriage. When I look at my parents, I think that’s one of the things they have going for them too. They feel comfortable talking about the stuff of life as they journey through it together.

As Julie and I have been planning for this next little adventure, one of the discoveries we’ve had is that our talking and planning is a fun and exciting part of the journey itself. Our time living Barcelona really began a year ago when we started planning for it. We just weren’t physically there yet. As Pooh wisely discovered long before we did, the preparation and anticipation is something to relish just as much as the experience itself.

If you’ve ever thought of taking a year off, or even if you just want some great advice on living well, I’d encourage you to read this article by Jane Hirt. She took a “radical sabbatical” from the Chicago Tribune and recorded her insights about the experience. We found it incredibly helpful.
